Tomato Soup and Corn Thins

From time to time, my little cook pot makes its rare appearance as a trustworthy travel companion. Usually, during harsh winter months or when Im sent packing to places where food sucks, (I'm really not picky with food!) because you can't say that couscous and hummus are real food.

So yeah, it would be the cook pot to my rescue albeit rather pathetically 'cus its usually canned food we're talking about. But there is nothing that a poor gal can complain under such circumstances, can she?

So please Babu, treat me to a proper meal when Im back will ya?

Can't believe it's already November. Can you? That we’re pretty much three quarters of the way through 2009 already? I know. Time is definitely passing way too quickly. I can’t believe it had been almost nine months ago that we had our first steamboat dinner together, and R announced thereafter she's pregnant. But the good news is, that little tomato will be welcomed into our world very very soon. So we went ahead and had a little baby shower for R and boy did we have fun gorging ourselves silly with food and laughter.

So now, before R pops...we're all waiting in anticipation. Imagining how things in future with our 4 plus 1 SATC gang will be like, one thing for sure, its going to get even more boisterous than it ever has been with our rackety rick racks and coo-ings and ah-ings over the little baby princess...

Saturday was spent visiting my Mom and his Dad.

Tan's family heirloom. The Boy says those teapots are authentic peranakan chinaware which ages up to almost 100 years old. The tiny eggshells you see are dinosaur eggs...not. They are actually what Uncle Kimba kept after he nourished the two birds who landed on the balcony mysteriously one night to health and those were then left over by their offspring.

I have been to Phuket many years ago when I was much younger, though funnily enough had forgotten how the island really looks or feel like. Fast forward years later, I am back here, on a treat no less, by a sweet boy. For six good days of purely doing nothing but everything.

I love our Phuket trip. It just feels like home, you know: the heat, humidity, mozzies, ants and food. My god, the FOOD. We're spoiled to bits in Phuket gorging ourselves silly daily. I feel a little crazy now having eaten banana pancakes everyday there. Phuket makes me feel free, in fact leaving my country makes me feel free, even the wind that blows into my face feel like little kisses there.

This is not on facebook, so you must be really lucky to see it.

Never knew sand could make me this happy.

Gearing up for the James Bond Island advanture. I felt like a bond girl after that, having don the bikini, climbed steep limestone covered rocks, got scarred by corals and really, got tanned after snorkelling that my nieces think I look like pocahontas. Someone help me to go back to white!

So, after a really filling breakfast of bratwurst and scramble eggs, I went for my usual Flab-to-Fab regime at Como yesterday. I almost definitely felt like puking when Yumiko made us squeeze our inner thighs and rocked our pelvic floors (or whatever you call it) so as to achieve toner triceps. The Boy went to his office while waiting for those triceps to get stiffy and ripped abs to appear. Alas, what came next after como could put me into cellulite hell!!!

Was having lunch with the the twins the other day and they got into another one of those random fights. Dun really remember how it got started but Cara started to sulk and pursed her lips into the tightest little knot. Upon looking at Cara's sullen face, being the big jie jie that Cayla is, she rattled off, " Dun sulk! Papa says if you sulk, you will grow up and look like this!"

Hasn't it really been quiet around here for a bit? In my defense, it is really one of those crazy "life-work-life-school" transition times, whereby your energy runs ridiculously low and blogging moves to the bottom of the "to do" list.
It is also Chinese New year and not to mention the endless amount of reports and assignments to hand in during this period. Talk about good timing!

Until! my assignments and exams are over, I would never get back to sanity. I did however, managed to squeeze some time in-between my chronic never-ending projects and got to enjoy san francisco and hongkong in their loveliest pre-spring weather with a buddy no less!

It was a good break, and now I return to busyness! Dreaming of spring, my forthcoming graduation in november and winning the lottery! Man, did u gals buy that 10 million draw last week?! I forgot and lost my chance. Damn! I totally broke down when I remembered and it was too late. Not that I'm one who has ever had luck in these things, but 10 million! 10 million!!!

Mummy had left us for slightly more than a month, and there is never a day where I do not miss her. We brought mummy to her new home on a Saturday, the 17th of February, and this picture was taken by none other than my cute little Cayla. I really think she did a great job, thinking that she did not cut away any of our heads and we were really perfectly centralized.

I snuggle to mummy's pillow every night now, hoping that I can meet her in my dreams, I wonder if she could see me from where she is and know how much I really miss her... Happy Lunar New Year Mummy.

The Boy and I were having dinner on Sunday night along East Coast and saw this little korean lass who bore an uncanny resemblance to one of the twins, Cara. So besides being a Rain look-a-like, she also bears a close resemblance to another little korean.

And whilst I was trying to get her best profile pictures possible, I was afraid the big burly beer drinking korean father would notice me, come up to me and smash my camera to pieces. But seriously, the similarity is striking! Im so gonna test Cayla and ask her if that's Cara.

Uncle Kimba

There are several reasons why this blog has seen a dearth of entries of late; one of them has to do with Uncle Kimba. The Boy's daddy who was recently and suddenly diagnosed with liver cancer in the advance stages, left us on 7 October, peacefully in his sleep.

This is a man I got to know 8 years ago, a sprightly and jovial funny old guy who is a great lover to Aunty Jenny, excellent daddy to the Boy and his sister and a very kind uncle to me. To see him go from his energetic self, from someone who always had too many things to do, to be bedridden and slightly depressed about needing people to help him with the most basic of functions, is really quite shocking. No longer do you see this short petite guy, with a full head of silver hair, rustle around the kitchen, whipping up his next best dish; no longer do you hear his footsteps on sunday mornings, waking us up for brunch.

But we learn, we all do.

The weeks before Uncle Kimba left us, the Boy and I made it a point to spend whatever time we have at home, to have dinner with him. Even as he fell ill and weak, he made sure people around him were well-fed, filling the table with our favorite dishes at every meal. The love he showers on everyone is admirable, although bedridden, he made it a point that freshly baked cakes for hari raya were sent to his helpers and his malay neighbours. Hiding his illness from his siblings so as not to make them worry, making calls to close friends checking on their well-being, and never once hinted to them about the pain and agony he was in.

When his sisters finally got to know about his condition, they formed a troop and begin to visit him in an orderly manner, making sure not all 6 of them came together as they knew he hates it when they make it such a great deal. The house became to lighten up with their laughter and humour but mostly filled with a dull ache. Sitting close and talking to a man who wasn't his old self. Watching the Boy giving him back rubs to soothe his pain stings my heart so much, knowing the man we all love is slowly leaving us.

At last, when the pain became too unbearable, Uncle Kimba was sent to the hospital. In the midst of morphine-induced hallucinations, he told his sisters to go gamble in the living room, he enjoys it when he watches them play si sek. Someone mumbles majong and he laments that he does not have majong tiles at home. He slips through sleep and comes around in short intervals always wakening to a close one by his side. When he left, he made sure he left quietly as how he had disclosed his illness to his loved ones; not making it a big deal. It comes as a much needed relief for him as we could never know how much pain he was in, unless we experience it ourselves.

I miss you Uncle Kimba, I feel so blessed for knowing someone so special like you. I saw many people crying as they paid their last respects to you; your friends, your relatives, your workers and even your neighbours. And the only good thing to come out of this, apart from bonding with the Boy's family, is that whenever I need an excuse to indulge in a hearty meal...I know you'll be with me.... xx

Operation Toughy Tuffy

Affectionately called by Gwen and Meryl as "Operation Toughy", four of us weathered through the heavy showers on Sunday and went down to the pet farms in Pasir Ris. Went knocking on all the dog farms along the stretch and then found one which is uber cute and fits the colour of our criteria in Ericson. We want something like this (pictured right), preferably a female but with a smaller bone structure...Owner said that puppy would grew up even bigger than the goldie pictured on the left and there was no way we could house him in a small apartment. Or so we thought.

Horie, Osaka

Osaka didn't come as planned, as I was originally rostered to go to Delhi instead. Bless my lucky stars and the saint Deeksha who swapped my flights for me, else it might had been a picture of the Taj Mahal on top.

This time though, I did my homework and googled for the best areas to shop in Osaka. Horie sprang up several times in the search results and besides, having an APC store there affirmed its credibility. Kinda, for me.

And so, I went! Of course I got lost lah! But thats the fun of it, no? And then while searching for Horie furiously, praying to heaven that I can't get anymore off track, I saw the sign "Orange Street". The very little japanese language that is still left in me managed to strike a similarity there. "Ho-ri-e" is affectionately known as Orange Street!

I did my legs justice for making them work so hard and let the shopaholic side of me go wild. Not as wild as I want to, but wild. Of the many things that I saw in Osaka, the amount of cyclist on the streets are numerous. And being Japanese, not one bicycle is ugly!

Ah-pek bicycle? cross, BMWs? cross cross!! And I'm talking about really pretty looking bicycles you can place in an editorial kind. Why isn't Singapore as cyclist friendly? Imagine cycling on the roads in Singapore, then a SBS bus zooms by you. You not only get a fright but also might suffer a spew of vulgarities, no less!

Now, side-track a little, but I have to mention the meal that I had on Horie street, as my legs gave way and stomach growl and could no longer stand the hunger, I hopped into a quaint little eatery along the shops and had the most wonderful soba I've ever eaten. I swear its so good, I wanna bring every one of my gurlfrens and Kenn there.

The birthday dinner at Sushi Yoshida, a mind blowing experience in a very charming restaurant with the freshest uni that made me go weak in the knees. If you sit at the bar, not only do you get to see the chefs in real action, they also occasionally serve up complimentary specialties to whet your appetite. Their signature dish, buttered alaskan crab with uni got the fireworks exploding in my head and I just went gaga from there. Not forgetting master chef Yoshida san, who scurries around the restaurant from time to time in his wooden clogs, making sure diners are having a merry time.

Damn nice lah, words can't describe, ~~Kenn must bring me there again~~ must must must go again! ;p

There is a Gem in Palais

Who knows there is a gem hidden in the nondescript Palais Renaissance waiting to be discovered. The palace maids (a pity not all were present) gathered yesterday night for an evening of food, fun, drinks, gossips, gossips and gossips!

I was pleasantly surprised when we entered the PS cafe in Palais Renaissance, despite it being housed in Palais, the cafe had an airy and lush space reminiscent of the PS at Dempsey. Definitely a perfect place to go in future after some vigorous shopping!

Island hopping

Hopped over to Sentosa on saturday for our mini romp in Shangri La for the weekend. Had a free night's stay due to dbs's credit card redemption rewards (too much shopping?!) The both of us had a funny feeling while getting there, the taxi ride, the beach and even the clothes we wore, had an inkling to our last bali trip.

But that feeling dies the moment we propped our lazy bodies by the pool. It was scorching hot and definitely no balmy breeze whizzing by. I could feel my body baking despite hiding under the umbrella. The weather was unbearably hot, but it could be all worthwhile for him when he saw himself getting a shade darker.

Luckily, he spared me the torture and didn't tan for long seeing that I almost got into a seizure due to the immense heat! We spent the afternoon exploring a little more of the beach, cooed about the many changes that are in the waiting for this tiny island.

Then sunday came and went. This moment I'm reminiscing about having breakfast by the porch watching peacocks strutting by, and its already tuesday. Seriously, where did all the time go?

San francisco road trip '08

Had a little excursion in san fran last week, went to an outlet in san jose. Quite a disappointing shopping trip, but loved the drive there. A colleague of mine recently introduced me to this blog. Basically it sums up the story a self-dramatized, self-pity junior stewardess who isn't shy about her candor and sexual encounters with random people. Whoever she is, she has a way of making me feel sick after reading her blog.

In digression, I just had a hot hot and I really meant literally hot chilli bath! Thats supposedly going to increase my skin's metabolism and make slimming more effective. Well, it kinda made me perspire a bit during the bath, but Im not sure whether it was the chilli or the temperature of the water. When I last checked, my fat slab of thighs that comes in a pair (no less!) were still there.

My truckloads of newly acquired dvds (read: Desperate Housewives and Gossip Girl!) has caused a slight negligence for my blog. Well, I blame Bali too, it seems one couldn't recover from laziness ever since returning from there!

On a second note, we found a pretty neat cafe in Seminyak, Bali.

If I ever own a cafe, I want it something like this too, wooden flooring, charming furniture and lovely chandeliers. Plus, they do serve an awesome lip-smacking chocolate fondant too. Or, oh well, I could just make do with returning back to Cafe Bali again, which I think I just might...

While I'm busy preparing for my coming exams, I would not be able to forgive myself if I hadn't gone out for shopping in Paris. It was perfect spring weather with soft breezes that refreshes you and a generous afternoon sun that warms your face as you walk along the streets in the romantic city.

Being this carefree, hoping into Paul for lunch, crunching on crisp salad. I take my mind off the exam. Is it me or has it something really gone wrong with what Singapore offers? We never get this fresh produce ever when you call for salads at most decent restaurants. I devour what I could at this moment and wonder what I would do without them when I return to Singapore.

"Vous avez des bonnes chausettes" (you have got very nice shoes) a random parisian said to me while I scurried off to Printemps.

He took me by surprise. I was thrilled and felt honored that someone notices my London Sole. A favorite, that I could wear them till its death.

Spring/Summer shopping never fails to excite you. You should have see what they offer here and shame on what Singapore has. I prepped myself for my mini getaway to Bali in june and found a perfect panama boat hat, something which I have been searching in Singapore for the longest time.

Wondering in Printemps, I stumbled upon their rooftop garden cafe. Once atop, the view was spectacular and you could even see the Eiffel Tower! I settled on a bench, rested my feet and sigh... this is what age does to you, they feel so wasted after shopping!

Had a recent revelation during Marie Digby's music showcase in velvet by R. She realized my face grew puffy through the night with each subsequent glass of drink I had. I always knew that sometimes I get puffiness around my eyes, but always associated that with tiredness and never relate it to alcohol. Her "discovery" startled me and now, alcohol and me aren't friends anymore. I say this with bitterness as it is a love-hate relationship. I miss the feeling of fresh malty beer trickle down my throat but I dun want to be puffy fish!?

It is high time!
I'm finally rostered for a flight that gives me the right to officially eat, sleep, drink and watch movies onboard - like any other passenger would. Except that the company pays me to eat, sleep, drink and watch movies. *GRINS*
It is particularly exciting as well, being the maiden flight (might be the last time as well) on the A345 aircraft before it gets more chi chi and all seats are upgraded to business class.

17 hours of pure bliss. For those who hate flying, it might sound like torture. I cant explain why, but there is an alluring factor of traveling to me. Be it a road-trip, train ride or flying, I love them all. And whenever it is time to get off, I am slightly overwhelm by the fact that the ride is over. Not someone who is big on small spaces and cries foul whenever being thrown into confined areas. Traveling is just different. Could it be the turbulence, the foil-wrapped pre-cooked food, or the individual pre-packed snacks? I really wonder.

The Twins got to know a new ~~JieJie~~ Auntie last friday and they really adored her! Both of them were bugging me to call her today, ask me what is she doing, is she working? Is she busy? Can I speak to her on the phone?

We had crepes, we saw the giant ferris wheel, ate calamari, went to the toilets many times and looked for pretty shoes.

They were totally shagged out and hit the sack right after we got home.

Use lots of olive oil, good bread and grill those bell peppers fine.

I used the gruyère from Borough Market for the eggs. Think it would also taste great if made into ham and cheese sandwich.

Ooooh London!

Was in London last weekend and resumed the standard routine of visiting Four Seasons in Bayswater for their celebrated roast ducks. This time though, my lunch partner and I walked through Hyde Park to get there. Why do I always get the feeling that I should bring along roller-blades to Hyde Park?

Needless to say, the ducks were fat and dripping with oil. I wasted no time in eating and therefore forgotten to take pictures. And so saved you guys from witnessing such a wicked meal. (Yeah...it was thoroughly arteries clogging)

We separated after lunch and I hoped onto the cab to Selfridges and went to Marylebone. Shopping was mind blowing for spring stuffs are absolutely gorgeous! Check these out French Sole, APC, Liberty.

This caused a mild stir in my pockets, but I think my booty buys made me quite happy. Yes, very frivolous! I know! Saw A in the night for dinner and it was D's birthday, (more pictures later) and we decided to visit Borough Market the next morning.

A, T and I sampled cheeses, smelt truffles and queued for chorizo sandwiches. Europe never fails with their amazing selection of cheeses. I bought a couple of blue and cheddar, chorizo sausages and yummy strawberry jam!

Lunch was Spanish paella at the market. There were only outdoor seating, therefore we ate while the wind chills pierced into our bones. Luckily the paella was good and we had good 'ol coffee for comfort!

Hello Maldives! Hello to the pristine sea water and sandy beaches, and thank god for that perfect weather!

We stayed on the island Bandos, a 15mins speedboat ride away from the Male airport. Fruit punches ala welcome drinks greeted our arrival and we were shortly ushered into what were like shady huts, our accommodation for the night.
Night passed briskly (thank god) and finally its time into the beach! Look at the waters! Its crystal clear and you could see fishes swimming even near the shallow shore area!

Auntie came to visit me, so I cant snorkel. Total booboo.

I like Male, especially when the weather's this fine, brings out your natural sunny disposition and releases stress each step you plunge your feet into the quick soft sand.

On the eve of Chinese New Year, I was rostered for a loooong 9 days flight to Moscow via Dubai. So long that when I returned, I couldn't really feel the festive mood and they have stopped playing those awful chinese new year songs on rewind in the shopping centers. I kinda made a resolution that I would try to slot myself for leave during this time next year. And probably absorb in all the festive air that I had missed for the past few years.

Although there wasn't any bah kwa nor typical gassy orange drinks that everyone loves to serve during the new year, it was the GREAT company that counts in Dubai and Moscow. It made working during the festive season more bearable and in fact quite enjoyable. And...I have like tons of pictures *GRINS* It really has been a while since I have taken so much pictures!

It was like 3 in the morning?! Really xiao! But damn funny!

Yesterday, I left the Business Stats class feeling shattered and mortified. Boy, my first taste of being totally demoralized this year, pretty devastating...

Missing out a couple of classes ~~Going to class with an empty stomach~~ have left me pretty shady in the world of stats. For now, I just pray hard that this worst would be over soon.

After class, I needed comfort food. So what could be better than a hot cup of teh aliah (ginger tea) on a cold windy night? K obligingly accompanied me to supper and we had Behoon Goreng and Chicken Murtabuk at one of the coffeeshops near his place. The food was good, so we know, we'll be back. Right now all worries about stats are tossed out from the windows, 3000ft high.

I started my first meal of the new year with a "Feel the Cheese" burger from Burger Edge. Pretty shiok fries they had, it was sea salt and black pepper for me, but sadly, I can't really feel the cheese in my burger leh.

Last weekend's plans were promptly settled as K and I were invited over to the Jemej's to celebrate Christmas with him and his colleagues. This was the invitation they sent out, pretty impressive menu huh?

Initially we were really clueless about what to bring over, we thought about the usual bottle of wine, to a bunch of flowers, to a barrel of beer(!) Then, an accidental insight into the couple's blog got us thinking and we think we found the ultimatum -
So, dinner went on pretty well, we ate heartily and EJ's chocolate fondant really got us all floored. Who knows the kind of devil that a simple looking chocolate cake lookalike that calls itself conceitedly, a Fondant, would make?

Dessert really got us kicking and more ice-cream was brought out. They came in really amazing flavours such as Teh-Tarik, Kahlua Latte, Durian and .... Spumoni. Spumoni?....What say u? Its actually something an in-between of rum and raisins and fruit cake. Pretty good I'd say.

After dinner it was presents time! Out of the many creative gifts which Jem had got for them, K got the spark gun (for always being the creative spark)! And in case we think they were really cheap (haha) K actually got a t-shirt and a pair of earrings for me.

When we came back home later that night, K and I just sat on the sofa and chatted about the whole evening. At one point, I told him about something that made me quite happy.

Me: You know, after I touched down in sg this morning, the first sms that I got was you telling me how much you wanted to plant a kiss on my lips.

K: Yah.

Me: That was really sweet you know?

K: Yah, and I was playing LAN at that point with the guys at katong, it suddenly occured to me how much I miss you.

I could feel the adrenaline coming as school had just started. And the datelines are sprawled across waiting to be met. Flights that must be changed, leave that must be approved.

And why am I still waiting for MIS's verification letter for exams? They emailed me over and over at breakneck speed to chase after some money they thought I had owed them. And now it takes them an eternity to prepare an already formulated letter for me. The most they had to do was to include my name and student number. Is it really that difficult?

Pretty pretty R treated me to be a tai tai for an afternoon at the infamous Mr Khoo's hotel.

The spread was english fare with sandwiches and dainty tarts paired with lovely chinaware. Everything was fine except the presence of a somewhat 'sotong' waitress whom seems to be...really enjoying the music being played on the piano. She had a weird assortment of clips clasped to her head and oddly gazed at the air around her. She looks like she doesn't have much friends. Its kinda wacky, but she reminds me of some people I work with!

In the midst of tea, we saw Mr Khoo himself pacing up and down the hallway several times. And we thought to ourselves, how is it like to be inherited a hotel? And have it as your own personal playground? You order room service as you like and book yourself into a room when you have a fight with your husband/wife. Then your children are practically born to enjoy life...Life is beautiful that way isnt't it? And the more we think the more we despise them people...oh...we are bitter "tais tais"...hahaha

Road Trip

On November 7, two crazy girls decided to head down to Tokyo city despite a short layover in Narita. And they had a helluva good time. Thank you Yoko chan!

Shuttle bus from the hotel to Narita Airport.

After getting express train tickets to Shinjuku, we had some time to spare and headed for coffee.

This is Yoko, teaching me how to come back to Narita. It's so confusing! I dunwanna learn!!!

We yakked, planned our route and caught up on valuable sleep in the train. After an hour or so, we finally reached Shinjuku, our hearts palpitating as we disembarked.

Yoko had some errands to run and we headed for Isetan, where I gawk at the beautiful shoes and clothes. U know, I really need to become richer. So many things to want to buy yet so little money!

Outside of Flags, we had a quick bite of crepes and coffee. Yum!

Along Shinjuku Station there is a pet shop where they sold kittens and pups.

Whilst we were shopping in Flags, Yoko got info from her friend that someone had committed sucide jumping off the Yamanote railway track. We had a mini scare as that was the line that could bring us back to Narita. But I guess the Japanese are damn efficient people for the lines resumed in less than 20 minutes. Could imagine them Nihonjin scooping up the body scraps and whistle the train to get going. For the trains cannot be late right?! Gosh.

I saw Factory Girl last night and fell in love with Edie Sedgwick. She is so beautiful, her clothes and style is amazing, and she has an incredible face. But sadly it was for an all too brief space of time that she was the bright light of Andy Warhol's insular world of self proclaimed superstars. Beautiful, wealthy and emotionally troubled, her life of excitement and excess withered rapidly into debt, drug abuse and isolation. Discarded by the social glitteratti when her instability became increasingly difficult to ignore, Edie's position as the girl of last year and eventual unremarked death stand as a scathing indictment of the fickleness of fame. Truely, she is the epitome of a "Poor Little Rich Girl".
